In light of some recently expressed concerns on who makes up the TABS organization and by what process are decisions made on behalf of TABS, this statement has been drafted for the purpose of clarifying these issues.
When the idea of the Toronto Area Boardgaming Society was first conceived in the Summer of 2004, it was a group of similarly minded individuals who all wished to see the boardgaming scene in Toronto grow. However, of that group, it was both myself and David B. who ultimately made the decision to proceed with the plan to form the organization and volunteer much of our time, money and energy to try and make it a success. We were fortunate in that the other members of that original group offered to assist us in advisory capacity and together we formed what would become known as the TABS Steering Committee (TSC).
Q – What is the Mission Statement of TABS?
A – The Mission and Vision of TABS has been and continues to be to promote the gaming hobby within the GTA by providing locations, events and connection services to allow boardgamers to meet and play games. Please see below for the kinds of games that TABS wants to promote. As a natural consequence to this, TABS is about growing the number of boardgamers (for the game types listed below) out there by creating a welcoming environment, one without attitude that brings more gamers into the hobby. We believe our actions and successes from TABSonline to the various gaming events hosted/sponsored by us have demonstrated our commitment to the Mission and the Vision. There’s no actual Manifesto, as we're about playing the games and not writing 20 pages worth of crap. We've seen that sort of thing in a couple of other groups where the focus was about rules of the club and who's in charge. If that’s what you’re looking for you'll need to find another club who's more into cliques/elitism/rules and regulations and less about having fun. Also, we’re inclined to give our members the benefit of the doubt that they can and will conduct themselves like reasonable and courteous human beings without the need for rules and codes of conduct.
Q - Who are the members of the TSC and how can I become a member?
A - Currently, the TSC is made up of the following people: Pete L., David B., Chris O., Andrew M., Rob C. and Scott M. Membership to the TSC is by invitation only. While members may of course submit their names for consideration, we would likely only consider those who had demonstrated those qualities we would look for in potential candidates. An example of such qualities could include: a proven record of taking initiative by organizing successfully run gaming events, volunteering their time to assist in TABS events, provide constructive thoughtful feedback on TABS events and the site.
Q – So who makes the decisions for TABS and by what process?
A – Depending on the nature of the issue, a decision could be either be brought before the TSC to discuss or as is sometimes the case Dave and/or I will simply make the decision. It’s important to note this because while TABS is a gaming organization free to join and open to all, decisions made on its behalf are not, almost without exception, done through wide consensus of opinion. We expect that we cannot satisfy everyone and that there will be dissenting views on the some of the decisions made, but we do expect that while you may not agree with one or more of these decisions that you be respectful of the fact it is ultimately Dave’s and/or my choice to make.
Q – Since I’m not a member of the TSC, how can express my opinion on how TABS is run or the decisions that are made?
A – From Day 1 we’ve welcomed feedback on anything regarding TABS that any member wishes to share with us. You can either contact us through the email address: email@example.com or send a private message to a member of the TSC. In that time we’ve received lots of feedback, much of it positive and many with useful, constructive views on how we can improve things, a number of which we’ve acted on.
Q – What kinds of games are the focus of TABS?
A – Right from its inception the focus has been on boardgames, both eurogames and wargames, and to a lesser extent on CCGs, CMGs and miniature games. A proper example of these kinds of games would be those found at the World Boardgaming Championships, Origins or other similar events. TABS is not about RPGs or LARPs and while computer/consol gaming has been discussed in our forums, it is not however featured at any of our events.
Q – What games are played at TABSCons?
A – Exactly as described in the point above. Table space is managed at TABSCon based upon the number of events, projected number of attendees and room space. Dave and I reserve the right to restrict the number of tables per event to make sure that as many events and players can be comfortably accommodated at each TABSCon.
Providing feedback in one of our forums is an option, but there is some risk involved in that it is a public forum and sometimes comments can be interpreted as being disrespectful, rude and even downright antagonistic. At the end of the day, remember that being a member of TABS is a privilege not a right. That this is a moderated site, as noted in The Parade Square folder, and that you are not entitled to say anything you want in whatever form you choose, but as per our rules, must be mindful and respectful of others. That Dave and I, as the administrators for TABS, make the final decisions on all matters concerning this organization and if ultimately you find that you cannot respect that fact then you have to have ask yourself if TABS is really the right gaming environment for you.
